On 31 July 1856, a Royal Charter made Christchurch a city and officially the oldest established city located on the South Island of New Zealand. It is the largest city and the seat of the Canterbury Region. You can witness the magnificent  Avon River flowing through the centre of the city, with an urban park located along its banks. Christchurch is the 2nd most populous city in New Zealand after Auckland and before Wellington. It is home to a number of tertiary education institutions such as the University of Canterbury, University of Otago, Lincoln University, and Ara Institute of Canterbury. Transport Facilities in Christchurch


Buses are the main mode of public transport available in the city. These are known as the  Metro buses which runs throughout the city and to the airport as well. The ticket price is also quite nominal with the adult cash fares for the airport transfers costing around NZ$8.50 one way and NZ$15 return. The best thing to is to have a MetroCard which will spare you from rummaging through change every time you need to hop on a bus. It will give you a 30% discount and also the allowance to travel on the Diamond Harbour Ferries that depart from the nearby town of Lyttelton.





If you are a student on a tight budget then cycling can also be a good option as it is quite popular in Christchurch and will keep you healthy as well. There are cycle lanes spread across the city and you will be amazed to see high cycling traffic all around. There is a public bike-sharing system in the city as well. You can hire a bicycle from services including City Cycle Hire, The Vintage Peddler and the Antigua Boatsheds.
